Today, we pause and pay tribute to the life and service of our loved one, Betty Sue Gunthrope, who peacefully transitioned into eternal life on Thursday, October 3, 2024.
She was born in Winnsboro, South Carolina on January 10, 1936, to David and Frances Gunthrope. Betty earned a B.A. from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, North Carolina, and a M.A. from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York.
Betty served on the faculty at White Plains High School for thirty-five years. She taught Business and Keyboarding, and in the later years, courses in Computing. In addition, Betty served as the Varsity Cheerleading Coach of the White Plains Tigers. After retiring, Betty continued her commitment to education by serving on several college scholarship committees. Betty shared her gifts with others not only by talking but by listening, and characteristically, not by taking but by giving.
Betty Sue Gunthrope, an esteemed Teacher, Advisor, Mentor, Coach and enthusiastic Cheerleader – first, last, always.
She loved the Lord and loved the church. Her spiritual life was nurtured in the Presbyterian faith. Her formative years were spent as a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church. Later in life she was a dedicated member of Shiloh First Presbyterian Church until her health failed her. Her favorite scripture was Deuteronomy 28:13.
As much as she loved the serenity that came from staying at home “Miss Betty Sue” was anchored in the love and affection she harbored for her extended family - beloved godchildren, cousins, neighbors, church members, close friends, former classmates and colleagues whether conversing on the telephone or at the “Roundtable”.
Preceding her in death are her parents and sister, Shirley L. Gunthrope. Betty is survived by her son, Anthony C. Gunthrope; granddaughter, Toni Gunthrope-Hardee (Sidney Hardee); grandson, Terrence L. Gunthrope, Sr. (Tanisha Stith); and six great-grandchildren, Terrence, John, Sydney, Taylor, Matthew, and Madison.
