Deacon Lawrence T. Byrd Sr. is the third child of Jesse Fred Byrd Sr. and Johnnie Juanita Glenn Byrd and the stepson of Vestina C. Byrd.
He was educated through the Fairfield County Public School System and graduated from McCrorey Liston High school in 1960. He was employed with Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company, of Winnsboro, SC for over 25 years. Shortly, after leaving Uniroyal, he organized and opened Byrd's Grocery Store. He also worked odd jobs as a skilled landscaper.
Lawrence leaves to cherish his members, his wife, Marjorie Anderson Byrd of 61years and six children: Sylvia B. McCants (Rodney) of Huntsville, AL; Earnestine B. Williams (James) of Blythewood, SC; Karen B. Pearson (James) of Winnsboro, SC; Curtis L Byrd (Shirley) of Columbia, SC; Lawrence Talmadge Byrd, Jr. (Kiesha) of Columbia, SC; and Marshall Wigfall (Rahsaan) of Midlothian, VA; 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; one sister Ernestine B. Williams of Bristol, CT, and brothers Jesse Fred Byrd, Jr. of Plainville, CT; Charles Byrd, of Forestville, CT; Jeffrey V. Byrd of Winnsboro, SC; one stepbrother, Walter McCullough of Hartford, CT.
He was preceded in death by three stepsisters, Norma J. Jenkins, Annie Mae Curlee and Theodosia Faye Curlee. Along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was a faithful and dedicated member of Blackjack Baptist Church for his entire life growing up in the church. He held multiple positions of leadership to include Chairman of the Deacon Board, Deacon Emeritus, Trustee, member of the Senior Choir, Sunday School Teacher and Church Custodian.
He was a lifetime member of the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge #33, a member of Fairfield County NAACP, and an active participant in encouraging and helping others within the community to include voter registration.
He enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, fishing, watching sports, mostly basketball, baseball, football, and wrestling. He even coached youth baseball teams.
He will be greatly missed!
